Why fruit peels might be the smartest skincare ingredient you’ve never thought about
Let’s start with a simple question:
When you eat an orange, what do you throw away?
Exactly. The peel.
Now here’s the twist: the peel can contain some of the fruit’s most interesting protective compounds.
Nature has a sense of humour like that.
Why Plants Put Power in the Peel?
Fruit peels are the plant’s first line of defence.
They’re exposed to:
- UV radiation
- Environmental stress
- Microbes
- Oxidative stress
To help protect themselves, many fruit peels contain naturally occurring polyphenols, antioxidants and other bioactive compounds.
These compounds help plants deal with the world around them — and some of them are also valuable in skincare formulations.
That’s the idea behind our tagline:
As a peel, I protect the fruit.
As Uppeel, I defend your skin.
Neat, isn’t it?
From Food Waste to Skincare
At Uppeel, we look at fruit by-products a little differently. Instead of treating peels, seeds and other food-industry by-products as waste, we explore how their naturally occurring compounds can be recovered and used in skincare.
That process is called upcycling.
It means we can:
- Reduce waste
- Recover valuable natural compounds
- Create high-performance skincare ingredients
So something that might otherwise be discarded gets a second life as an ingredient.
Not a bad career change for a fruit peel.
From Waste to Bioactives
Two ingredients we’re particularly proud of are:
VitisDefy 🍇
A bioactive derived from upcycled grape pomace, including grape peels left behind during winemaking.
Its naturally occurring compounds are used to create a skincare active designed to support more even-looking, healthier skin.
TheoDefense 🍫
A cocoa-derived bioactive made using upcycled cocoa shells left behind during chocolate processing.
It is designed to support skin firmness, elasticity and resilience.
♻️ THE UPPEEL IDEA
The most valuable part of something isn’t always the part we keep.
Sometimes, it’s the part we throw away.
Why Upcycling Matters?
VitisDefy and TheoDefense may come from very different sources, but they share the same idea:
Take something overlooked.
Recover what’s valuable.
Give it a new purpose.
That’s what Uppeel is all about. Because good skincare doesn’t have to start with something new.
Sometimes, it starts with giving something a second life.
