So… What Exactly Is a Bioactive?
A bioactive is an ingredient that interacts with your skin’s biology to deliver a specific benefit. You’ve probably already heard of a few.

- Niacinamide is often used to support the skin barrier and improve the appearance of pores.
- Hyaluronic acid helps skin retain moisture and appear plumper.

Why Do Bioactives Matter?

Are All Bioactives the Same?
Not really.

Both approaches can work well. What matters is the ingredient, evidence, formulation and how it performs on skin.
Natural bioactives can be especially interesting because plant sources often contain a collection of naturally occurring compounds, including polyphenols, flavonoids and antioxidants.
These compounds can contribute to the overall activity of a plant-derived ingredient and may support more than one skin benefit.
Think of it this way: a highly purified active can be a specialist — excellent at one specific job. A plant-derived ingredient can be more like a team player bringing several naturally occurring compounds to the table.
Why We Love Plant-Derived Bioactives?
Plants naturally produce protective compounds to help them cope with UV exposure, microbes and environmental stress.
